Louisiana Leather

I love art that makes me feel connected. Connected to my past, my home, and the things that I love. The Leather series was born from that connection.

The inspiration struck when I was studying the hide of an alligator for a painting and couldn’t help but think that it looked like the grid of a map. And what is more Louisiana than an alligator?

About the alligator-inspired series

The Louisiana Leather series is a fresh take on the old land grant maps of the Mississippi River and is a unique way to celebrate the beautiful Louisiana swamps and Gulf Coast.

Paintings feature a low-sheen paint like matte or satin. The map is always a gold or silver leaf. When the light hits the gold leaf map, it looks like it is going to pop off the canvas. Carefully placed mounds of paint capture the texture of an alligator hide.  The colors are selected to play off popular design trends so the series will compliment a wide range of interior décor.

Commissioned pieces from the Louisiana Leather series are completely customizable so they complement the space perfectly. Leah Marchand can pull in the creamy wall colors, accent with blues from the rug, and use warm browns to match the leather couch. You can also personalize the city and layout of the map.

Every print from the Louisiana Leather series is hand embellished by Leah Marchand. Giclee canvas prints have a 1.5” profile and are reworked with gold leaf. Archival paper prints are reworked with liquid gold leaf. Both have a matte finish, so the gold really pops in the light.
